The Birth Lottery
The Birth Lottery is a free game about the circumstances people are born into. Nobody chooses their country, their family's income or their sex at birth. The game shows how much those draws shape a life, using real data.
Roll
You are born five times. Each birth places you in a country, a wealth class and a set of circumstances, weighted by real population data, so you land where people are actually born. Play Roll.
Stories
Play one whole life, from childhood to old age, making the choices at each stage. Each life is a composite built from sourced accounts of real lives. Four lives are playable now: Tunde and Adeola in Nigeria, and Seo-yeon and Min-jun in South Korea. More countries are coming. Play Stories.
Streak and the Daily
Streak asks three-option questions about world statistics: life expectancy, years of schooling, access to safe water, number of children and global wealth. Keep answering correctly to extend your streak. The Daily is one shared set of questions each day, the same for every player. Play Streak.
Who it is for and where the data comes from
The Birth Lottery is made for curious players and for classrooms. It is free and has no ads. Country figures for 198 countries and territories come from the World Bank World Development Indicators (population, life expectancy, children per woman, safe water, internet use and income distribution) and the UNDP Human Development Report (years of schooling).
